Early Voting in New York City Is Over: 1.7 Million Ballots Cast Across New York State, and the Next Vote Is Tuesday

Early voting closed at 5 p.m. on Sunday across the five boroughs. A state tracker counted 1,705,698 ballots cast in New York, Reuters put the national early vote past a midterm-record 52 million — and there is no early voting on Monday. The next vote anyone casts is on Election Day.

Early voting in New York City is over. The nine-day period that began on October 24 closed at 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 1, and the scale of it is now a matter of record: a New York early-vote tracker drawing on state election-office counts put 1,705,698 ballots cast across New York State as of Sunday, every one of them in person.

New York City was voting inside a national surge. More than 52 million Americans had already voted in person or by mail as of Sunday, according to the University of Florida's Election Lab, reported by Reuters — a record for a midterm election, and up from nearly 46 million who voted before Election Day in 2022. The early vote is not a preview of the result — New York does not publish the party of its early voters, and no count of any ballot happens before Tuesday night — but it is a measure of how much of this election has already happened.

For New Yorkers who have not voted yet, the calendar now has a hole in it: there is no early voting on Monday, November 2. What Monday does offer is the last day to apply in person for an absentee or early mail ballot at a Board of Elections office. A completed mail ballot must be postmarked by Election Day, November 3, or delivered in person by 9 p.m. that night.

After Monday, everything runs through Tuesday. Polls in New York City are open on Election Day from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and anyone in line by 9 p.m. can still vote — at their assigned Election Day site, which may not be the site where they would have voted early. The early voters have done their part of this election. Tuesday's voters decide the rest of it.

How the Administration's Noncitizen Voter Lists Could Shadow Tuesday's Midterms

The Justice Department has told five states — California, Washington, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Nevada — that it found noncitizens on their rolls, and is suing California over 20,000 voters. Two courts have said no so far. Reuters explains how the lists could still be used to contest close results on Tuesday.
