After the Finish: NYC Marathon Runners Exit at West 77th, and Family Reunion Runs 11 to 6 on Central Park West

Crossing the finish line is not the end of marathon Sunday — it is the start of a walk. Here is where runners come out of Central Park, where families meet them by surname, and why the organizer says not to trust your phone to find each other.

After the Finish: NYC Marathon Runners Exit at West 77th, and Family Reunion Runs 11 to 6 on Central Park West (New York City Gotham News)

The finish line is the famous part. The hour after it is the part nobody trains for. Under New York Road Runners' published plan for today's race, finishers keep walking: runners exit Central Park at West 77th Street, collect their finisher poncho, and only then reach the streets where anyone is allowed to meet them. A runner who crossed the line feeling strong should still expect the exit walk itself to take real time — the crowd moves at the speed of 26.2 miles.

The meeting is organized, and it has an address. Family Reunion runs on Central Park West between West 69th and West 71st streets from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., arranged by surname, with screening at entry. The organizer's own advice to supporters is patience with a number on it: arrive about 20 to 30 minutes after your runner's expected finish, because reaching the reunion area takes that long after the line. Supporters who pre-checked a bag for their runner will find that collection nearby on Central Park West, around West 73rd to 75th streets, until 7 p.m. — there is no bag check at the start, and nothing is carried from Staten Island to the finish.

The warning that matters most is the phone. The organizer cautions that cell-service congestion around the finish can interfere with phones exactly when everyone reaches for them, and the guides read by this desk repeat it plainly: agree on the meeting point — the surname section, a corner, a landmark — before the race, and write it down. A plan made at breakfast still works when a text does not.

The day's shape makes the plan easier. The five starting waves run from 9:10 to 11:30 a.m., so finishers arrive at West 77th in a stream that lasts from late morning until after dark, with the last runners coming into the park in the evening. Families with a morning finisher and families with an evening one are running the same errand at different hours: same exit, same reunion streets, same poncho coming toward them through the crowd.
