Halloween Night on the Subway: A, C and E Reroutes and No L Trains to Canarsie This Weekend

The MTA is reshaping three of the city's busiest lines for Halloween weekend, just as the Village Halloween Parade fills Sixth Avenue tonight — and the L train is not running between Broadway Junction and Canarsie at all.

Halloween Night on the Subway: A, C and E Reroutes and No L Trains to Canarsie This Weekend (New York City Gotham News)

Halloween weekend is a planned-work weekend underground. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has reshaped A, C and E service across Manhattan and Brooklyn from Friday night through Monday at 5 a.m., a set of reroutes that lands on the same Saturday night as the Village Halloween Parade, which steps off at 7 p.m. on Sixth Avenue and draws some of the year's biggest subway crowds.

The A train carries the deepest cut. Inwood-bound A trains are running via the F line between Jay Street-MetroTech and West 4th Street from Friday at 11:45 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m., and in that stretch uptown A trains do not stop at High Street, Fulton Street, Chambers Street, Canal Street or Spring Street in Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. Riders headed for those stations need a downtown train back, a different line, or a longer walk — on the night of the parade, the West 4th Street station sits directly on the parade route.

The C and E fill in around the A work, and both are changed all weekend. C trains are rerouted in both directions on Saturday and Sunday, days and evenings, between Jay Street-MetroTech and 59th Street-Columbus Circle via the F and A patterns. Downtown E trains run local from 125th Street to Canal Street all day Saturday and Sunday, and uptown E trains make the local stops at 23rd Street and 50th Street that they normally pass.

Brooklyn's hardest hit is the L. There is no L train service between Broadway Junction and Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway from Saturday at 3:30 a.m. through Sunday at 10 p.m., with free shuttle buses replacing the trains on the skipped stretch. The authority's advice is the same as it is every planned-work weekend, only louder tonight: check mta.info or the MTA app before leaving, and give any trip that crosses a reroute extra time.
